Square

All entries

Two planets 90° apart: friction, and a push to do something about it.

The uncomfortable aspect par excellence, and also the most productive: it sets two functions in conflict and forces a solution. Charts without squares tend to be placid and not very driven.

Reading it in your chart

A square usually links planets in signs of the same mode but clashing elements: Aries and Cancer are both cardinal, for instance, but one is fire and the other water. They share the same urge to act and opposite ways of going about it, and that is where the friction comes from.

In your chart, ask which two functions are colliding. Moon square Mars is traditionally read as the need for security set against the impulse to react at once; Sun square Saturn as the wish to shine set against the fear of getting it wrong. On the SideraMea wheel squares are drawn in red, and count up to 6° either side of exact.

Why it drives growth

A square is often lived as a recurring problem: the same situations keep coming back until you find a new way of handling them. That is why many astrologers call it the engine of the chart. Squares show where things are hard, but also where, over time, you become skilled, because you have had to practise.

When two planets in opposition both square a third, the pattern is called a T-square: the third planet becomes the point where the tension looks for an outlet. With four planets arranged in a cross, it is a grand cross. These are demanding patterns, traditionally read as a great deal of energy to steer rather than as a sentence to serve.

Frequently asked questions

Are squares bad in a birth chart?

Not in the sense of bad luck. In astrology a square describes an inner conflict between two needs, which can bring stress, impatience or rushed decisions. It is also the aspect that pushes you to act and to change. Plenty of determined, enterprising people have charts full of squares: there, difficulty turns into skill.

What happens during a square transit?

When a transiting planet squares one of your natal planets, it is traditionally read as a time of pressure: something needs adjusting and will not wait. Squares from the slow planets can last for months, and in traditional reading they are linked with significant decisions. For transits an orb of 3° is used.

What does it mean if you have no squares in your chart?

In astrology a chart without squares tends to describe someone easy-going, who avoids conflict and finds balance readily. The risk is a lack of drive: without inner friction, outside stimulus is needed to get moving. That role is often played by transits, or by the people you live and work with.
