Two planets 60° apart: an opportunity, but one you have to take.
Lighter than a trine and less automatic: it describes an available possibility, not a talent that expresses itself. If you do not use it, it just sits there.
Spotting it in your chart
A sextile usually links planets in signs of compatible elements: fire with air, earth with water. Gemini and Leo, for instance, or Taurus and Cancer. They do not share the same nature as in a trine, but they understand and help each other, rather like two colleagues with different skills who work well together.
It also has the tightest orb of the major aspects: SideraMea counts it up to 4° either side of exact in the birth chart, and 2° in transits. The reason is traditional: a lighter aspect loses force quickly as it moves away from exact, and with a wide orb it would turn up everywhere without saying much.
A worked example
Picture Mercury in Gemini sextile Venus in Leo. In astrology this reads as a knack for speaking warmly, for finding the words that charm or persuade. But the sextile does not do it for you: the gift shows when you write, put yourself forward, say yes to the invitation to speak. Otherwise it stays a quality other people sense and you never use.
This is why sextiles are often read through the houses involved, which show where in life the opening appears. A sextile between the third and fifth houses, say, links communication and creativity, and suggests bringing them together in something concrete.
Frequently asked questions
What does a sextile mean in a birth chart?
It shows two planets 60° apart which, in astrology, cooperate willingly but not automatically. It reads as a resource on standby: a skill or an opening that becomes obvious once you take a step towards it. It is a light, harmonious aspect that rarely causes trouble and tends to reward initiative.
What's the difference between a sextile and a trine?
Both are harmonious aspects, but a trine, at 120°, links planets of the same element and works by itself, almost without you noticing. A sextile, at 60°, links different but compatible elements and is lighter: it offers a possibility you have to switch on. Hence the saying that a sextile asks for a move and a trine does not.
Are sextile transits important?
They are usually quiet. Traditionally a sextile transit opens a small but real window in which a contact, an offer or an idea finds fertile ground. It does not push like a square and rarely leaves a mark, so you mostly notice it if you look for it. With a 2° orb, sextiles from the Sun, Mercury and Venus usually last only a few days.
