Trine

All entries

Two planets 120° apart: they cooperate effortlessly.

The aspect held to be easiest, and for that very reason the least visible: what works by itself goes unnoticed. Trines describe talents taken for granted, which often serve to offset the harder parts of a chart.

Spotting it in your chart

A trine almost always links planets in signs of the same element: the three fire signs, the three earth, the three air, the three water, each 120° from the next. That shared nature is what makes it flow. Two planets in trine speak the same language: Mars in Aries and Jupiter in Sagittarius, for example, feed each other's drive and confidence.

On the SideraMea wheel trines are drawn in blue, and count up to 6° either side of exact. When three planets form three trines with one another, astrologers call it a grand trine: a triangle describing a very fluid part of the personality, sometimes so comfortable that it becomes a place to rest rather than to grow.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is to treat a chart full of trines as a lucky one. Traditionally the trine describes ease, not success: without some friction, that ease can go unused. This is why many astrologers pay close attention to trines involving planets that are also caught up in squares: there the talent has a reason to get to work.

The second is to stop at the signs. Because orbs allow a few degrees' leeway, two planets can be 120° apart while sitting in signs of different elements, say 29° Leo and 1° Capricorn. That is a trine in every sense, but it is read as less harmonious than usual, because the two signs do not share an element.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to have a lot of trines in your birth chart?

In astrology a chart with many trines describes someone to whom several things come naturally: relationships, study or creativity, depending on the planets involved. The flip side is a tendency to coast. Trines tend to give their best when something else in the chart, often a square or an opposition, pushes you to actually use them.

Is a trine better than a sextile?

Not better, just different. A trine describes a harmony that runs by itself, almost without you noticing. A sextile, at 60°, is lighter and needs a small step from you to switch on: it is an opportunity to take. Many astrologers find sextiles easier to use deliberately, precisely because they are not automatic.

What does a trine transit mean?

When a transiting planet forms a trine to one of your natal planets, it is traditionally read as a stretch when things flow: help arrives, timing works, effort meets little resistance. Because it is easy, it can slip by unnoticed. It is worth spotting and using to start something that would take more effort at another time.
